Adult teeth straightening isn't what it used to be.

Twenty years ago, if you wanted straighter teeth as an adult, your options were limited. Metal braces, and not much else. The idea of a professional adult with a mouth full of brackets was, understandably, a barrier for a lot of people.

That's changed completely. Today, most adults straightening their teeth do it discreetly, comfortably, and often without anyone noticing. But there are still real choices to make. Clear aligners aren't right for everyone. And sometimes, quietly, traditional braces are still the better answer.

In this guide we'll walk you through your options as an adult, how they compare, and how we help you choose the right one at Claris Dental in Newmarket.

The four main options for adults

For adults, there are four main routes to a straighter smile:

  • Traditional metal braces.

  • Ceramic (tooth coloured) braces.

  • Lingual braces (fitted behind your teeth).

  • Clear aligners.

Each has its place. The right choice depends on how much movement your teeth need, how important discretion is to you, your budget, and your lifestyle.

Traditional metal braces

Metal braces are the option most adults immediately dismiss, and often wrongly. They're still the most reliable, versatile route for complex orthodontic cases. If your teeth need significant movement, if you have serious bite issues, or if multiple problems need addressing at once, metal braces often deliver the most predictable results.

They're also the most affordable option, which matters.

The downside, of course, is the visibility. Modern metal brackets are smaller and less obvious than a decade ago, but they're still noticeable. For adults in professional roles or with public facing lives, that's a real consideration.

  • Treatment time - typically 12 to 24 months.

  • Best for - complex cases, significant crowding, major bite correction.

  • Cost - usually the most affordable option.

Ceramic braces

Ceramic braces work identically to metal braces but use tooth coloured or clear brackets. From a distance, they're much less noticeable. Up close, you can see them, but they blend far better than metal.

They handle the same complexity as metal braces, which makes them a strong middle ground option for adults who need serious orthodontic work but want more discretion.

The trade off is cost and fragility. Ceramic brackets are more expensive than metal, can stain if you're a heavy coffee, tea or red wine drinker, and are slightly more prone to chipping.

  • Treatment time - typically 12 to 24 months.

  • Best for - adults who need traditional bracket and wire treatment but want more discretion than metal.

  • Cost - more than metal, less than lingual.

Lingual braces

Lingual braces are fixed to the back of your teeth rather than the front. Completely invisible from the outside. Nobody knows you're wearing them.

They're excellent for adults where discretion is paramount, and they can handle complex cases the way traditional braces can. But they come with real trade offs. They take longer to fit, cost more, are harder to clean, and take some getting used to. Speaking with braces on the back of your teeth is an adjustment.

They're not right for everyone. Not every practice offers them. And they're at the premium end of orthodontic pricing.

  • Treatment time - typically 12 to 24 months.

  • Best for - adults where invisibility is the top priority and budget is flexible.

  • Cost - usually the most expensive option.

Clear aligners (often called Invisalign)

Clear aligners are the option most adults ask about first, and often for good reason. They're custom made, transparent trays that gradually move your teeth into a straighter position. Virtually invisible, removable, and comfortable. At Claris Dental we use 32Co clear aligners. If you're interested in how the different aligner brands compare, our companion post on clear aligners vs Invisalign goes into detail.

Clear aligners are excellent for most orthodontic cases. Crowding, gaps, minor bite issues, all straightforward. Complex cases involving significant bite correction may still need traditional braces, but for the majority of adults thinking about straightening, aligners deliver excellent results without the visibility, discomfort or dietary restrictions of fixed braces.

  • Treatment time - typically 6 to 18 months, often faster than fixed braces.

  • Best for - most adult orthodontic cases where you want discretion, comfort and flexibility.

  • Cost - comparable to or slightly less than ceramic braces.

Comparing effectiveness for adults

For the majority of adult cases, clear aligners and fixed braces deliver equivalent results. The difference is in the details.

Fixed braces have more control over individual tooth movement, which matters in complex cases where teeth need to be rotated significantly, or where bite correction is the main goal.

Clear aligners are excellent for the movements that most adults need. Closing gaps, addressing mild to moderate crowding, refining a smile. They also cause less friction and pressure than fixed braces, which some patients find more comfortable.

The bigger factor in your outcome, honestly, isn't which system you use. It's the treatment planning of your dentist, and how consistently you wear aligners (if you choose that route).

Comparing comfort and daily life

This is where clear aligners really pull ahead for most adults.

With fixed braces, you have brackets and wires in your mouth continuously. You need to avoid hard, sticky and crunchy foods. Cleaning takes longer. You'll get occasional discomfort as wires are tightened.

With clear aligners, you take them out to eat and drink anything you like. Cleaning your teeth is the same as before. There's mild pressure when you switch to a new tray, but no ongoing bracket irritation.

For a lot of adults, that daily life difference is what tips the decision toward aligners.

Cost of straightening your teeth

Costs vary depending on how much movement your teeth need. Rough guides for the UK:

  • Metal braces: from around £2,000.

  • Ceramic braces: from around £2,500 to £4,000.

  • Clear aligners: from around £2,000 to £5,000.

  • Lingual braces: from around £4,000 to £8,000.

At Claris Dental we give you a clear, fixed quote at your consultation. And we offer flexible dental finance to help spread the cost over manageable monthly payments.

Comparing treatment time

Treatment time depends more on the complexity of your case than the system you choose:

  • Simple cases: 6 to 9 months.

  • Moderate cases: 9 to 18 months.

  • Complex cases: 18 to 24 months or more.

Clear aligners can sometimes complete faster than fixed braces for straightforward cases, because the treatment can be planned with fewer visits to the practice.

How to choose

Here's how we think about it at Claris Dental.

Start with clear aligners if

  • Your case is straightforward to moderate.

  • Discretion matters to you.

  • You'd prefer to keep eating and drinking as normal.

  • ou're happy to wear trays for 20 to 22 hours a day.

Consider ceramic braces if

  • Your case is more complex.

  • You still want a discreet option.

  • You don't want to worry about wearing aligners consistently.

Choose metal braces if

  • Your case is genuinely complex.

  • Budget is a significant factor.

  • You're not concerned about visibility.

Consider lingual braces if

  • Total invisibility is essential.

  • Budget is flexible.

  • You're willing to accept the initial adjustment period.

The honest truth is that most adults are excellent candidates for clear aligners. That's why so many adult straightening cases now use them. But we'll always tell you honestly if we think a different option would give you a better result.

Yes. Regardless of which system you choose, you'll need retainers to hold your teeth in their new position. Teeth naturally want to shift back over time, and retainers prevent that. Most patients wear them full time initially, then just at night long term.
